PRESS RELEASE: RECLAIM THE SCENE

On Saturday (28th August) Reclaim the Scene will be hosting their annual Post Parade Picnic at Pride. The Picnic (running from 2-9pm at UMIST Campus) aims to show Manchester Pride organisers that Pride can be free, community led and political. The picnic will include free food, performers from local Manchester based acts and performers, kids entertainment and much more.

The stage will be given over to LGBT and queer (and queer supportive) acts, speakers, dancers, DJs, poets, musicians and bands. With the impressive line up, Reclaim the Scene should not be missed.

In conjunction with the Salford Music Co-Op, and Gash Collective, Reclaim the Scene will lend its stage to acoustic sets from Catlow and Ash Jones, speakers from the Queer Youth Network and National Union of Teachers. With music from Awesome Wells, and dancing from Manchester’s Rock It Bellydance and the Spokes Bicycle Dance Troupe there is something for everyone. We will then dance the night away to the expert DJing from Rachael Neiman of Cherryade Records and Scally Dan Dan.

The event is entirely not-for-profit and aims to tackle the overt commercialisation of Manchester Pride, the extortionate wrist-band prices and lack of politics presented by Manchester’s biggest gay event.

Reclaim the scene is a coalition of LGBT (lesbian, gay, bisexual, trans) and queer individuals. We have three main aims:

  1. Pride should be free
  2. LGBT and queer rights should be at the top of the agenda
  3. The ‘village’ should be welcoming, inclusive and accessible.
